What a sports massage is, is a more focused massage. It's meant to alleviate pain and tension within the body. It's more focused. Usually a certain area is having stress. It's not just for athletes you know. We all get sore carrying the groceries, carrying the kids. So with that sports massage we are going to find that area of concern: neck, shoulders, a leg, calves, arms and we're going to focus on that area. We use types of massage to alleviate tightness, and smooth and just make things feel good and loosen that up.
As an example, lateral knee pain may be caused by a chronically tight . Or, pain at the fibular head may be caused by a tight hamstring. Release of this tight musculature along with assisted stretching and massage can increase circulation and reduce metabolic waste.
Marathon runners often receive regular massage as part of their overall maintenance to help relieve tension in overworked muscles before problems develop and to help maintain flexibility and reduce injuries.
